Primary Source Evaluation

Part I

Working independently, students will read and evaluate each primary source using the Primary Source Evaluation Tables. The questions are guiding and students may not be able to answer each question based on the primary source information.

  • Copy and the Primary Source Evaluation Tables into your own Google Doc
  • Use the Example Primary Source Evaluation Table as a guide

Part II

In the last section of the primary source evaluation tables (linked in Part I), students will focus on outlining connections made, gaps found, and the relationship of the primary sources to their thesis/research. The questions below are guiding; therefore, students do not need to address every question.

  • Connections—Students make connections between primary sources: Chronologically, Geographically, and Thematically.
  • Gaps and Further Questions—Students will find gaps between the sources and generate questions to create a better overall narrative.
  • Thesis and Research—Finally, students will explain how these sources could potentially influence their thesis or research.
